Random Obituaries: Kurt Vonnegut @ Ice 9

Posted on Apr 18th, 2007 by ~C4Chaos : (hyper)linker ~C4Chaos

(Crossposted from www.c4chaos.com)

Kurt Vonnegut died on April 11. I wanted to give him a tribute on my blog. I wanted to do it with style, but I wasn't sure how. To be honest, I haven't read any of his works. But I understand how influential he was. He influenced a lot of the people who have influenced me, so I'm indebted to him just the same. So allow me to pay him a tribute, not with words, but with a rockin' out of this world music from my favorite guitar god. Here's Ice 9. Take it away Joe!

Joe Satriani - Ice 9 (Live 2006)

Thanks
Mr. Vonnegut. Godspeed and keep on surfing...

must have worn a hole into my original surfing with the alien LP when it came out in about '87?

around the same time steve vai was going one better than eddie with his DLR solo albums and i was listening obsessively to VH's women and children first, hendrix's live band of gypsies record and dave gilmore's beautiful playing on dark side, the wall and the live delicate sound of thunder sets….as well as santana's under-rated 80's masterpiece called salvador and his well-known psychedeic opus - abraxas…

the 20 year old apartheid policeman (literally) who lived across the street would come over and bang menacingly on the front door because i rocked my fender strat and japanese distortion pedals so hard trying to emulate the tone and atitude of these mofos - i wasn't even close to the note for note…

thanks for the trip down memory lane c4!

C4,  I first heard Satriani on the best speakers I have ever encountered in my life (to date). Take a wild guess how blown away I was by *that*!   Thank you for posting this, it was even mind buzzing on my little donut of an ipod speaker I have hooked up to my computer.

Like you, I have not read Vonnegut. Or anyway, precious little. But I honour him and those who have been touched by his writing. You waited…… and you found a perfect way to pay tribute with style : )   Thank you.

Julian, you've got me wanting to find all those old albums, myself : )

bows,

very cool, coolmel.

I suspect KV would approve highly. Weird that we both wrote obits and yet never really read any of his stuff. I have to say I admire the fact that you – and you too, dear Crow! – state this outright, I, of course, hedged the point.  Thanks for reminding me (to be more transparent).

As for the music.. well… Robert Fripp is a bit more my style ;-)

Sandra, I have never heard Fripp before, but I was mesmerized, held in place. Things to do, places to be, but I couldn't bring myself to miss a single note.
