~Omni-Peephole: Beyond Belief 2006

Posted on Dec 7th, 2006 by ~C4Chaos : (hyper)linker ~C4Chaos

I don't know why but I'm on my atheistic roll these past couple of days. Today I've watched some videos from the Beyond Belief 2006 Conference wherein prominent atheists like Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Steven Weinberg, and other scientists and philosophers shared their views on religion and science.

Beyond Belief '06 - Sam Harris (Clip 2)
I have no problems holding their views within my own mindspace. A colleague of mine had put it succintly:

"I think it's a great thing to have this kind of discourse take place across the globe.  As the mythic arguments are increasingly broken down, and as people increasingly dis-identify with their mythic identities, we'll see a move toward rational thinking (as opposed to mythic thinking).  This is a necessary step toward the trans-personal and trans-rational worldviews, which will come only after the rational worldview has its day."

I couldn't agree more. Beyond belief is the rational. Beyond the rational is the transrational. My faith lies in the transrational.

Go ahead check out more videos at the Beyond Belief site. It's chicken soup for our rational souls.

P.S. I just finished watching Beyond Belief: Session 1 video in it's entirety. Excellent discussions. Sam Harris' arguments are impeccable. Dogmatism is indeed dangerous and religion should not be exempted from criticism. I'd buy that. Very ballsy. I like ballsy people. Sam Harris rocks! But I'm more in agreement with Steven Weinberg, Lawrence Kraus, and Michael Shermer. They seem to favor the middle way: meeting people where they're at. As Lawrence Kraus had put it: "If you believe that a rational world is a better world, and I do, and I know you do, to me one of the best ways to do it is to demonstrate rationality, rather than attacking irrationality."

That Lawrence Kraus quote demonstrates a very mature perspective.  Thank you!
